Cannabis is perhaps most often thought of as a flower product. But, in fact, there are several other ways in which it is produced and sold. Here at PUR Cannabliss, we proudly offer many forms of cannabis that can be implemented in your wellness path – whether you are a newcomer or longtime enthusiast.

In one of our previous blogs, we discussed the many effective methods of consuming cannabis flower. The next stop in our journey together is learning about some popular concentrates available on our dispensary menu.

What are cannabis concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are cannabis extracts that contain a more potent form of cannabis flower. The targeted compounds, usually cannabinoids and terpenes, are extracted from the plant. The result is a concentrated extraction of THC. However, different extraction processes create varying textures and appearances.

Because concentrates are just that, concentrated, this means that users should tread very lightly when starting out with them. A significantly smaller amount of concentrate is required to produce desired effects, compared to the amount of flower.

Concentrates can contain up to 90% THC (!) which means you may only need an amount the size of a grain of rice to get the job done.

How are concentrates used?

Concentrates are an extremely versatile cannabis product. Most commonly, concentrates are inhaled through a process called dabbing. Dab rigs, a device similar to a bong, can be used to inhale the concentrate by heating it with an open flame (usually a butane torch).

Concentrates can also be vaporized, like cannabis flower. They can be sprinkled on top of a bowl or added to a joint to give it an extra kick. If inhaling cannabis isn’t your thing, concentrates can also be used in edibles.

As mentioned, there are different types of concentrates based on the extraction process. What are some examples, you may ask? Here are some of the most popular concentrates:

  • Wax

Wax is much more malleable than shatter and can range from a sticky/gooey to a crumbly texture. It’s much easier to manipulate than shatter, which means it can be handled a little more easily.

The THC concentration in wax can range from 70-90%.

  • Budder

Budder, aka batter/badder, is malleable like wax but has more of a buttery texture. This is not to be confused with cannabutter, which is actual butter infused with cannabis.

Budder can be as potent as 80-90% THC, making it one of the more powerful concentrates.

Newer Concentrates

With the development of cannabis concentrations, some new concentrates have sprung up in recent years. Here are some of the newer cannabis concentrates:

  • Live Resin

Live resin is known best for its strong aroma and flavor, which is often lost in other concentrates.

Its texture is similar to that of wax. Live resin is made from cannabis flower that is frozen immediately after cultivation.

The drying, curing, and trimming phases of harvesting are skipped when creating live resin, which maintains terpenes (compounds responsible for smell and flavor).

  • Diamonds

With up to 99.9% THC, diamonds (aka THCa diamonds) are a dabber’s best friend. Diamonds were first discovered in 2017 when a crystalline concentrate was formed after removing the terpy sauce.

It has less flavor, but it certainly packs quite the punch.
